Care Instructions Following Sealant Application

A preventive sealant has just been placed on one or more of your child’s permanent teeth in order to prevent cavities in the tooth’s irregular biting surface. The sealant material is now fully hardened and your child may resume normal eating and chewing.

Following its application, a sealant may feel a bit high when your child bites. This will self-correct in a few days. Your child may also complain of an odd taste in his/her mouth. This will shortly disappear.

Sealants will resist wear for many years under normal circumstances. However, chewing ice, hard candy, or other hard objects should be avoided, as this habit may not only damage the sealant, but may also fracture restored and healthy teeth.

Sealants may require periodic repair if portions of the sealant wear or fracture in particularly decay-prone areas of the tooth. The integrity of the sealants will be evaluated at every checkup appointment.
